Epworth is excited about our newest mission area -- Angel Food Ministries -- which will be rolled out to the large community beginning in September 2010.  Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States

Through the Angel Food Ministries program, host churches take pre-orders, primarily done online, for “units” of food, based on a monthly menu (listing of food).  Each “unit” is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box, and is sold at $30 per unit, with other offerings with varying pricing.  While each month’s menu is different than the previous month, every monthly unit consists of both fresh and frozen items that have an average retail value of approximately $60-$65.  Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week, or a single senior citizen for almost a month, and contains an average of 6-7 different meats or main courses, pasta & rice, eggs, potatoes and other vegetables, as well as fruits and dairy products.

The food is all the same high quality one would purchase at a grocery store, with no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented or unlabeled cans, no day-old breads, and not produce that is almost too ripe.  The meats, produce, frozen foods, and dairy products are considered “restaurant quality” and are acquired through involvement and partnership with the best producers/vendors of high quality, “name brand” foods.

Beginning the end of May, Epworth members, friends, and family will have the opportunity to "test drive" the new program by ordering various packages for themselves, prior to our "official public roll-out" in September.

In addition to the standard $30 food package, offered each month are specialty boxes such as steaks, chicken and pork, seafood packages, fresh fruits & vegetable "boxes," and 2 different "after school" snack & food offerings geared toward children (though adults will find these items great for lunches and snacks as well!). In addition, there are individual prepackaged “senior” meals, containing an average of 10 complete meals, as well as supplemental fruit, dairy, and snack items.  And, there is a special Allergen-Free food box as well.  Many participants in this bonus program appreciate the expanded choices.

There is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods an individual can order and receive, and there are no applications to complete or qualifications to which participants must adhere. Anyone can participate, regardless of income.  Angel Food Ministries also participates in the U.S. Food Stamp program, using the Off-Line Food Stamp Voucher system.

Orders are collected by the host sites during the first part of each month, primarily online. These orders are then turned in to the Angel Food main office on a predetermined date for distribution later in the month. Our Epworth volunteers will oversee distribution on one Saturday per month, during a 2-hour pick-up time frame.  And, once Epworth becomes a host site, Angel Food Ministries donates $1 per regular unit sold to the church's general fund.  Since its inception, Angel Food Ministries has contributed over $12 million into host church’s mission funds.

But the real service is to the community!  During these tight economic times, Angel Food Ministries allows each of us, and our neighbors, to realize a savings of almost 50%, by selling a “box” of quality food worth $60-$65 for only $30.  And, each box that is distributed spreads the good news of the gospel of Christ and of Epworth and our services & ministries through literature that is placed in each food order.  Epworth anticipates a tremendous response to this new ministry program!
